Blown Glass Class in Murano
We had a private glass-blowing class in Venice on a small island called Murano. I fell in love with these tiny glass animal figures in Venice. My mom is taking home about 30 of them for me. I'm going to have a whole little army. Before our class, we got to sit in on a demo of the glass maker, showing us how to make a vase, horse, and swan. He made all of it look so easy; going into our workshop, I decided to leave with one good-looking horse or swan sculpture. Let's say that did not happen; I did make a snail-looking thing. We learned two different techniques during our session. The first technique was glass sculpting, where we were shown how to make a simple flower. The second technique was glass blowing that turned into a tumbler cup…. mine was more like a shot glass. Whoops! I learned throughout this process that it takes lots of precise thought. You only have about a minute and a half to work with the glass until it becomes solid. When you have the glass on your pipe, you must make a circular motion; otherwise, gravity will pull the glass towards the ground. You have to be very patient and delicate with the glass when sculpting because if you roll or pull too hard, you won't get the outcome you hoped for. However, after this class, I have come to appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into creating glass sculptures. It gave me a different approach and perspective when I came across other glassworks throughout the cityscape.
