A day trip to Burano Island

We took a ferry to the island of lace. During a tour, we learned that it has been a native tradition that the men are known to work in glass making, which is seen on the island of Murano, and the women are the lace makers, which takes place on the island of Burano. It was so cool to see how much the style of living and culture changed between these two islands. Burano started as a small island with only about 15 residents but has grown slightly over time. It is still seen as one of the smaller islands, but you can tell that its history is essential to its people. We met a sweet older lady who has been doing much of the lace-making on this island for most of her life. The detail in the lace is genuinely an art in itself. We then met a sweet older man working on more of his miniature glass creations. He saw how much I loved the glass animals and insisted on making me a mini glass mouse as a gift. He said they were important in Venice and were seen as good luck. He told me about his history on this island and how his grandfather passed down his business. He has been working with glass and making his creations for more than 56 years now. This island is small, but its cultural impact is mighty.
